HIPAA Overview
The
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), was
enacted when Congress realized the need for better patient medical and
confidentiality laws, since the original state laws left gaps. HIPAA laws
require that companies use new safeguards to protect the confidentiality of
that information, while encouraging companies to use electronic transactions
to hopefully lower health care costs. The final provision HIPAA covers went
into affect April 14, 2001, which stated that all medical records disclosed
whether electronic, written, or oral and individually identifiable health
information are protected by the final provision.
